: What is Professional Success
Professional success is different to different people. For some it may be having a high salary and a fancy company car, and for others it may be being able to implement ideas or having a good balance between work and private life. Goals and priorities are very different, and for many people these change over the course of their life.
Despite the many different opinions, there is however a certain common understanding of what sets professionally successful people apart from the rest.
The essence of professional success can be reduced to 3 points. A professionally successful person
> has special skills and know-how,
> has interesting tasks and responsibilities, and
> can master difficult situations.
Earning lots of money is desirable for many, but there are enough people who are considered professionally successful and yet were never rich, such as persons working in the social field, top sportsmen in the past or politicians.
According to the majority of those surveyed, it is not necessary to work for a renowned company or be renowned themselves, in order to have professional success.
So if you want to be professionally successful, you need to be able to answer the following questions whole heartedly with a yes:
> I have special skills and know-how.
> I have interesting tasks and responsibilities.> I can master difficult situations.
But even if you fulfil these basic conditions, this does not mean that you are a successful person. A house with a door, windows and a roof may give you shelter, but a hut doesn’t make a mansion.
Who embodies professional success?
A person embodies professional success if he or she fulfils the greatest desires of many other people with his or her job. But what are the greatest desires of the general public?
The majority of people aspire for the following in their professional life:
> they want to like their workplace,
> they want to have fun on the job,
> they want to be able to make decisions.
Whiners and wage slaves have no chance of being considered professionally successful. So if you want to stay right where you are, go on complaining. But if you want to move on and move forward, then you have to do something about it. Professionally successful people actively pursue their wellbeing at work. With this objective in mind they master difficult situations on their way.
Can you fully agree to the following statements?
> I like my workplace.
> I have fun on the job.
> I can make my own decisions.
If you answered all of the above with yes: Congratulations! Most people would consider you professionally successful. If not: work on these points.
